It's a Party! Grow Your Blog and Giveaway

It's a party - whoohoo! Who doesn't like a good party? I'm anxious to meet some new people and see what you've been up to to wile away these crazy cold winter days. There are so many great bloggers participating in 2 Bags Full's Grow Your Blog!

But first a little about me. And I mean, just a little because I really don't like talking about myself that much.

Here's the surface view of Me:  My Day Job is managing a state-wide accounting association. I've done that for more than 15 years from my home office and I'm getting ready to retire from it a year from now (yea!!!).  But retiring isn't in my vocabulary just yet. . . . . . I'm also a quilter!

Quilting has become my passion, so much so that I bought a Gammill long arm quilting machine a couple of years ago and I've been in seventh heaven ever since. Sure, I've torn my hair out trying to learn to navigate the tricky boundaries and interplay of thread and fabric. But it's been great fun! I've discovered late in life (I'm still holding onto being a 50+ something gal for a few more months) that I have a creative side to me that loves being released. Loves it!

Quilting practice after taking one of Judi Madsen's first long arming classes. Fun, fun!

Baby quilt from fabric swap

So I work my day job, quilt for others, and make some nice things to sell in my Etsy shop (link at top of page) and at local craft fairs. Definitely keeps me busy.

I have two grown children: a son who is an accountant and a daughter who is a fine jewelry designer. She's always been the creative one in our family and now it's paying off for her as she designs custom-made, fine wedding and engagements rings. My husband and I have a 15-year-old Cocker Spaniel named Misty, and we've been dog-sitting our son's Cocker Spaniel, Camber, for several months now while he gets settled into a new job. I love these critters!

Misty - the Old Lady at 15
Camber loves his toys!

We've lived near the Sun Valley ski resort in the mountains of Idaho for more than 30 years, and so I consider myself a Mountain Girl. Hiking, boating, fishing, skiing, watching wildlife and just plain watching the clouds pass by are some of the many ways I feel blessed to live where I do. This is my little piece of God's Country and I don't take it for granted one little bit! It's also why I named my business Mountain Quiltworks. I love where I live!

View from my living room window. See? I'm blessed!

This is part of a herd of 17-23 deer that hang out. Very cool.

Here's a bird's-eye view of my neighborhood.
Oh, look! There's my house - way down there out the canyon to the east by that BIG white field!

And now for my Giveaway! And of course it's fabric!!! I have four one-quarter yard cuts of Kaffe Fassett, Phillip Jacobs and Brandon Mably fabrics! I cringed when I cut them from my stash, but I'll bet they will end up going to a good home!

  1. That is one lovely view from your home! I have a longarm too but thankfully no day job. Quilting for myself and others is how I spend most of my day.

  4. What an awesome place to live with such beautiful scenery. I just moved to the Tulsa area from Atlanta and my sewing room is still packed up. I'm organizing my sewing room last because it's a huge distraction that I would never get the other rooms organized. I sew clothes, totes and love to quilt. I have a long arm and I'm still in the practicing stage...do you ever get out of that stage? Thanks for the giveaway chance.

  5. What a beautiful place to live. I'm a born and raised flatlander from Missouri and am surrounded by farms and fields but I adore the mountains. Since I'm retired I do a lot of sewing of quilts, crafty things and clothing for my niece and sister. I also do embroidery and enjoy hand piecing quilts. In the summer I enjoy working outside in the garden and taking short road trips to investigate the surrounding states. The first quilt in your post is beautiful and the second one is just so pretty. I think you have the quilting pretty well nailed down,it's wonderful.

  11. Barb, your work is beautiful! I tried my hand at a long arm, and it definitely has a learning curve. Your fur babies are sweet, and I understand the attachment.

I'm a newer quilter/blogger from the midwest. My attachment is definitely for the color, but I think, even more so, the challenge. This is such an open field split between skills and creativity, and both excite me. It's what drives me to work for hours every day in pure bliss!

Love your fabrics you've chosen. I'd love to be the lucky recipient.

  12. Hi. I'm Kathy from Ohio. I love to quilt. I found that I have the same passion and also invested in a longarm about 2 years ago. I am addicted to quilt alongs and BOM's. I love ANYTHING scrappy. People give my scraps at random. They bring them to surprise me at work, at the YMCA, at church, or just call to say "come get 'em". I blog at new2quilting.blogspot.com. Nice to meet you!

I'm an English teacher, mother of two grown daughters, and grandmother of a delightful four-year-old girl who spends a lot of time with me. I love bright colors, Kaffe, and batiks. I've been accumulating Kaffe fat quarters, planning for a pickle dish quilt. I don't have a lot of time to quilt during the school year, but I try to do as much as possible during the summer. I've only recently started keeping photos of quilts (I wish I had taken pictures of all the quilts I've gifted) so there is not much on my Flickr page, but here it is: https://www.flickr.com/photos/112865627@N06/

Well, I really don't want to talk about the insurance company. 81. Hi Barb
I live in sunny Australia and we don't get snow where I live. It snows in the mountains but that is a couple of hours drive from my place. Today is Australia Day. We have a public holiday and there are celebrations and fireworks tonight. I saw a report on the news that Julie Bishop (our Deputy PM) and Hugh Jackman lit up the Empire State Building in green and yellow to celebrate out National Day.
Later this week the schools will return after the long summer vacation. This evening the roads will be very busy with holiday makers returning to the capital cities for work and school.
I am enjoying being at the beach - love the evening walks along the sand with my shoes off.

  120. Hi Barb, I'm dropping by on the GYB party. Waving Hello from snowy cold eastern Canada. I have an aunt who lives in Challis- a bit north of you. I visited her a few years back - what beautiful country!! You have a lovely blog- really like those SSS BOM blocks- I'll be anxious to see how you put them together. Hope you'll have time to drop by and see me at Stitch Lines. Have fun with GYB.

  131. What a beautiful place to live! And amazing quilts! I'm just learning to sew "the real way." My daddy taught me to wing it years and years (and years!) ago. Now that I kind of know a little more what I'm doing, I'm enthusiastically looking to build my fabric stash to make goodies for Operation Christmas Child. :-)
