I free-motioned the stems and veins on the leaves, then 'thread painted' the leaves with back-and-forth free-motion sewing across the edges with a coordinating variegated thread. I have just done a raw edge,...I have done it also. I have just done a raw edge, getting the stitching close (but not too close) to the edge. More like a thread detail - then you can also detail the veins.
